One of the most brutal murders ever to occur in northeastern pennsylvania could be solved through
DNA testing, the president of the national forensic science organization claims. The victim was 96
year- old Hugh MCGhee of Hickory street, Wilkes- Barre, who was strangled to death in a robbery\
murder on March 17,1986. Four persons were arrested in that case including Susan Santione\ which
is now Susan Harris of Old Forge which is married to Robert Harris he works for Old Forge police\
Moosic police part time. The others were three out-of-town black men: Leroy Myricks, Roger
Waddel and Gerald DuBose. The Luzerne County District Attorney's office decided to nolle pros (not
prosecute) the case when a witness, Debbie Owens, would no longer cooperate. The Commonwealth
reserved the right, however, to reinstate the charges if new evidence were to present itself.
MCGhee's body was discovered by a neighbor in his home at 30 Hickory Street at 6;00pm on
Tuesday, March 18, 1986, at 6;00 pm. His hands were bound behind him with a black belt. An
undetermined amount of cash was believed to have been removed from his home and a coroner
noted that death was due to strangulation. It is the original statement of the witness, Debbie Owens,
which could now open the door to solving the case. At one point in the murder investigation Owens
related how Santione decried the manner in which MCGhee died. According to Owens, Santione and
the three black men drove from a motel to MCGhee's home the night of March 17. After the four had
returned to the motel room. Santione was in hysterics because MCGhee had been killed in the course
of the robbery attempt in his residence, the witness originally claimed. Owens said Santione was red-
faced and crying when she said to Myricks," Why did you have to kill him?" Did they really kill
him?" Owens asked Santione, according to a police affidavit. "Yeah," Owens claims Santione replied.
They put a black belt around his neck and Myricks was dragging him up and down the steps with the
belt around his neck and put his head in a toilet." Before MCGhee died of strangulation, Owens
further claims that Santione told her Myricks forced anal sex on the robbery victim and taunted the
96- year-old man by asking, How do u like it?" If an act of rape against the murder victim actually
occured, advances in forensic sciences today could bring at least one of the suspects to justice.
Back in 1996 there was no sophisticated DNA testing of blood and sperm, one or both which could
have been the by products of the old man's rape. Robert Jennings, a former Wayne County Coronor
who has used forensic science in solving murder cases, claims that, if the evidence is there, it can be
identified"through DNA testing. Besides serving as Wayne County Corner for years, Jennings also
is President of the Evidence Photographers' International Council which is involved in the field of
forensic science. Jennings reminded that scientists now want to run DNA tests on whatever they
fined in the grave of Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John WilkesBooth, who died over 100 years ago.
This would end a controversy whether the remains occupying Booth's grave are in fact those of the
actor who was supposed to have shot Lincoln. A law enforcement source told the Metro that pressure
will soon be mounted on the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office to resume the probe into
MCGhee's death by exhuming his body. The Old Forge Tribune has new evidence putting Santione
at the crime scence of the murder which this news source plans on discussing with his Lawyer and
the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office or the Attorney General's Office. Why would the
District Attorney's Office in Luzerne County not prosecute this case. Writter and owner Robert
Hughes. This is Santione Husband he works 4 days in Old Forge police and 2-3 days in Moosic police.
