Old Forge, Lackawanna County - It's been four weeks since news of a sex scandal erupted in Old Forge. The borough's police chief and captain are suspended. Now some residents are calling for more change - they say to ensure the police department is completely honest. Tuesday night the borough's council met for a work session. Some people living in Old Forge remain skeptical of their police department since the borough's police chief, Larry Semenza, police captain Jamie Krenitsky and former firefighter Walter Chiavacci were charged with sex crimes against a 15 year-old. These people are now calling for the officer in charge of the department, Kim Buggy to step down.
"I feel that Officer Buggy needs to go, of being in charge of the police department because we don;t need the scandal again like we have now," said Robert Hughes. He runs Old Forge Tribune, an online news source. He said he investigated one woman's claim that Buggy lied about statements in a 2006 police report.
"There's no statements. How can you make an arrest without statements?" he asked.
Old Forge Borough Council President Brian Rinaldi says there are no changes to the police department at this point. He says Officer Buggy is the most senior officer on the force and was selected by Mayor Michele Avvisato when the police chief and captain were suspended without pay. The mayor was tight lipped if there was a plan to change who will run the police department.
"Can't answer that right now... no comment," said Avvisato. Neither the mayor nor Rinaldi would comment on the allegations that Officer Buggy lied in a police report.
People said something needs to be done to restore faith in the borough.
"We need to get the pride and reputation back in Old Forge like it was before," said Hughes,
Avvisato said there are currently three full-time police officers on duty in the borough and more than a dozen work part-time.
The regular borough council meeting is scheduled for June 19th.
